History and Gallery of Examples
Chattanooga Contemporary is an experimental style because these houses are recent creations lacking the heritage and familiarity of a long-established architectural language. The best contemporary houses are environmentally responsive and well-composed buildings with a pleasant massing, openings, materials, and details. Chattanooga Contemporary is a style that harmonizes with the other architectural styles by using similar main bodies but follows different rules of opening composition, material, and building color. Given Chattanooga’s rural heritage, a contemporary architecture can introduce building materials and details found in nearby rural architecture such as metal roofing and siding, metal windows, shed canopies, steel framing, and a rich palette of colorful finishes. The architect is invited to invent a new neighborly house: one that welcomes visitors, enriches the public space of the community, and speaks of a new Chattanooga.
