My Street
Valley Street
Public Front Yard
Although Valley streets may be similar in dimension, each street offers a unique experience. The varied house styles, porch furnishings and the attention paid to front yard landscaping enrich the character of the streets and neighborhoods. If the front yard is paved over or the original character of the house destroyed with inappropriate alterations, the character of the street and neighborhood is damaged. When both are attractive and thoughtfully maintained, the street and neighborhood benefit.
Lot Zones
Blocks with alley loaded lots have the advantage of parking access and garages facing the alley in the rear of the lot. This allows the street frontage to be uninterrupted with driveways and frequent curb cuts. The entire width of the house lot facing the street can be attractively landscaped.
In blocks without alleys, driveways are needed to park cars on the side of the house or in the back yard. Cars should never be parked in the front yard. Driveways should be no more than eight feet wide to minimize their impact and provide adequate space for an attractive front yard.
Parking
50' lot parking
Parking is a more important aspect of modern life than it was when many of Chattanooga’s homes were built. Many older and historic homes are limited to a single-car garage, carport or driveway for off-street parking.
Parked cars belong beside or behind the house, and should never be parked in the front yard or garden. In the Valley neighborhoods, garages are accessed either from an alley, a narrow 8 foot drive past the house to a garage in the rear yard or, occasionally, from the side street.
